African-American Methodist Church

Erected in 1930, the current New London United Methodist Church, North is the third church
building on the site since the lot was originally donated for this purpose. In
1851 Andrew Holt, an emancipated African American resident of New London,
donated the small parcel for the construction of a church “for the special
but not exclusive benefit of coloured people.” Local worshippers met at
this site continuously from that day until 1990. In 2005 members of the Friends
of New London stepped in to rescue the church from demolition. The group took
ownership of the property in 2017. Plans for restoration are underway. Continue reading below for additional details.

Goal
We plan to use the restored church to interpret African-American history in the village and perhaps to have church services here once again.
Phase 1
The first step is to repair and replace all of the wooden siding that cannot be salvaged and to paint the building’s exterior. This is a crucial first step to weatherproof the structure and prepare for restoring the interior. Our fundraising goal for this phase is $15,000. Click here to contribute:
